A draft report presented to the One High Point Commission has outlined policies to address past racial discrimination in the city.

Earlier this month, the commission reviewed recommendations in areas such as housing, health, and transportation. According to the High Point Enterprise, the group was formed in 2022 to study reparations for Black residents in the city.

The report was developed by a team from the National Institute of Minority Economic Development.

Project Manager Lea Henry said one proposal is for the city to formally apologize for its past role in racial oppression. Another is to create a truth and reconciliation process.

"This is an ongoing conversation between the city and its residents," Henry said. "There's a lot of information that most residents of the city may not be aware of."

Prioritizing street repairs in neglected neighborhoods and incentivizing fresh food retailers in food deserts were other recommendations.

A final report is expected to be presented to High Point City Council in September.
