$60-million development project comes to East Winston

A $60-million development project is coming to East Winston, an historically underserved community in Winston-Salem. It's the first phase of the East End Masterplan — a vision begun in 2016 by members of the city council, planning department, and the S.G. Atkins Community Development Corporation — to bring much-needed mixed-use, mixed-income development to East Winston.

The broad plan includes increased access to healthcare and economic mobility as well. United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist — an African American church community anchor for nearly 130 years — led the three-year capital campaign. Rev. Alvin Armstead Jr. says it's just the beginning.

“We don't just stop once housing is placed there,” says Armstead. “We don't stop once healthcare opportunities and services are there. We don't stop once training is taking place. But we will continue to survey the needs of the community and do our best as a church and as a congregation to meet those needs.”

Metropolitan Village will be located just east of U.S. 52 on the corner of Highland Avenue and 5th Street. Armstead says construction will begin later this year.
