Boom Supersonic brings 'future of flight' to the Triad

Gov. Roy Cooper at Piedmont Triad International airport announces that aerospace company Boom Supersonic will manufacture its new passenger aircraft at PTI. DAVID FORD/WFDD

Governor Roy Cooper announced that aerospace company Boom Supersonic will manufacture its new passenger aircraft at Piedmont Triad International Airport in Greensboro.

It was cold and windy in the covered departure wing of PTI, but the weather did little to dampen the spirits and anticipation of the roughly 500 people in attendance. The new Overture Superfactory campus at PTI will produce planes capable of flying at twice the speed of today's passenger jets with flight times of less than four hours from New York to London. Manufacturing them here means roughly 1,700 jobs paying on average just under $70,000, and more than $500 million of investment.

Governor Cooper said the Wright brothers made North Carolina first in flight, and Boom is launching the future of flight.

“The goal is Supersonic, zero carbon, sustainable flight that will connect the world at record speed with the least damage to our environment," he said. "Boom Supersonic will locate its flagship, final assembly line — its superfactory — right over there.”

PTI faced heavy competition from multiple airports. The North Carolina legislature approved nearly $107 million for airport improvements to help secure the aerospace manufacturer. The company plans to have Overture ready to enter service in 2029.
