Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools reported on Monday the lowest weekly total of COVID-19 cases among students and staff since the school year began.
One hundred sixty-one cases were reported during the first week of October. That's about half of the school year peak of 314 cases reported in mid-September.
The lower numbers are in line with statewide trends. A report from the state department of health and human services shows cases connected to K-12 schools have been declining now for three consecutive weeks.
Forsyth County Public Health Director Joshua Swift says COVID-19 vaccinations among 12-17-year-olds have increased since the school year began.
About 44% of that population is now fully vaccinated, up from 35% at the end of August. Swift says they are now preparing for federal health officials to authorize vaccinations for younger children.
“We're working with the school system, having discussions now about how we can meet that need, looking to possibly extend some of our vaccine hours,” Swift says.
Swift says they estimate that 58-66% of Forsyth County's children ages 5-11 will get vaccinated.
