Kennedy To Continue Housing Work After Leaving Greensboro Council For City Post

Former Greensboro Council Member Michelle Kennedy has been hired to lead the city's Neighborhood Development Department.

Kennedy says housing-related funding from the American Recovery Act and COVID response dollars make this a once-in-a-generation chance to make lasting change.

“The city is standing at a really interesting moment as it relates to the opportunities that are available to enhance issues of stabilizing our housing stock and creating more affordable housing,” she says. “And I'm excited at the opportunity to be able to lead that work.”

Kennedy withdrew from the council Tuesday. Greensboro's guidelines would not allow her to hold the position in city government while also serving as a council member. She was named to the departmental director position two days after stepping down.

Kennedy had been serving as director of the Interactive Resource Center, a comprehensive day center for the homeless. Associate director Kristina Singleton will fill the vacancy left by Kennedy's departure.

The city of Greensboro is currently taking online applications to fill the now-vacant at-large council seat.  Applicants may make a brief presentation to the council during a special meeting Sept. 14.
