A North Carolina education nonprofit is recruiting tutors to work in school districts across the state this year. The goal is to address learning gaps exacerbated by the pandemic.
The North Carolina Education Corps, or NCEC, is hiring literacy tutors for districts such as Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools, Guilford County Schools, Lexington City Schools, and others.
The tutors will focus on literacy education for kindergarten through third grade. But NCEC ambassador Chandler Pettigrew says the academic support will go beyond just literacy.
“More than anything we just want to be able to have just a little bit of extra help in various classrooms so that students can feel as if they're like, ‘Wow, I have someone on my corner,'" Pettigrew says. "And while the focus right now is on literacy, you can't teach a child unless they feel supported and if they feel safe.”
Some districts are hiring for full-time positions and others for part-time. Tutors will work in person during the school year during regular school hours.
Funding comes from different sources depending on the district but can include covid relief funds, and additional state and federal money.
The deadline to apply is August 3, 2021.
