Triad Cities Weigh Whether To Reopen Council Meetings To The Public

The city of Greensboro will permit a limited number of people inside the council chamber at the Melvin Municipal Building beginning July 13. BETHANY CHAFIN/WFDD

For the first time in more than a year, the Greensboro City Council is planning to allow members of the public to attend its meetings in-person, but only under certain circumstances.

In a news release, the city said it will permit a limited number of people inside the council chamber beginning July 13. Residents will be allowed to be there only while the specific agenda item they're interested in is discussed, and will be asked to leave immediately afterward. Masks will be required.

The city of High Point is allowing its council members to take part on-site, but the gatherings are still closed to the public. A city spokesperson says they may reconsider that stance during their June 21 meeting.

Winston-Salem's council meetings are still being conducted virtually, although some members, including Mayor Allen Joines, have attended from inside City Hall.
