Rep. Virginia Foxx Evades Metal Detector Breaking House Rules

Representative Virginia Foxx has made national news by evading metal detectors placed outside the House chamber. The move could prove costly.

Foxx recently became the fifth House member to be fined for violating the rule put in place following the January 6 capitol insurrection — it's a $5,000 fine for the first offense, $10,000 for each subsequent offense.

According to witness statements from Capitol Police officers, on May 13 the 77-year-old Republican Congresswoman ran through the magnetometer activating the alarm, threw her bag underneath the adjoining table, ignored the officers' verbal attempts to stop her, and entered the House floor.

After casting her vote Foxx returned to the screening area to be screened during which time, according to the hand-written police report, she stated: “Good thing no one stopped me.”

Some lawmakers filed appeals earlier this year contesting their magnetometer fines. Two were successful.
