Greensboro City Council Mulls Delaying Fall Elections

Greensboro's city council is considering postponing this fall's elections due to delayed census information.

Data from the U.S. Census that determine whether districts would need to be redrawn isn't expected until September, well after candidate filing deadlines.

During Tuesday's meeting, Council unanimously voted to delay making a decision on election dates until June 15. A recently filed senate bill would give cities more flexibility to postpone elections.

Mayor Nancy Vaughan says she's hoping the state will step in.

“I would want to have an election the quickest way possible, but I believe the census needs to be taken into consideration. So I think in the next month we may see some movement there," said Vaughan. "We may also see some cities band together to ask the legislature for some help”

The city's annual budget proposal was also unveiled at Tuesday's meeting. It restores about $5 million dollars cut last year due to the pandemic. Council will hold a public hearing on budget June 1.
