North Carolina Bill Could Do Away With End-Of-Course Exams

Summary of HOUSE BILL 486: Replace EOC with National Assessment. EDDIE GARCIA/WFDD

A new bill moving through the North Carolina General Assembly could phase out End-of-Course tests, or EOCs, for high school students.

Those tests would be replaced with nationally recognized assessments.

If passed, House Bill 486 would effectively end the EOC exams as soon as the 2023-24 school year. Student scores from the ACT or SAT would replace the current tests for reading, math, and science.

The decision as to which test would ultimately be used could be determined during a bidding process later this year.

The bill also aims to establish a new career readiness indicator, which would replace the WorkKeys system currently used by students on career and technical education tracks.

The bill is sponsored and co-sponsored by seven Republican lawmakers and one Democrat

In order to become law, it still needs to pass in the House, and move on to the state Senate.
