Dr. James Carmichael Renick, a former chancellor of North Carolina A&T University, has died. He was 72.

University officials praised Dr. Renick for his leadership during a time of growth in enrollment and facilities.

His personal side was revealed on social media following the announcement of his death. Alumni and university friends remembered him as a positive role model and an approachable leader.

Renick arrived on campus as chancellor in 1999, a position he held until 2006.

Recognition of the civil rights movement in Greensboro was a key aspect of his tenure.

In 2001, A&T worked with a non-profit organization to help develop the city's International Civil Rights Center & Museum. Additionally, the university installed a monument commemorating the four freshmen who led a sit-in at a downtown Woolworth's in 1960, according to a university biography
