Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools officials say they'll begin a national search for a new superintendent to replace Dr. Angela Hairston.

Hairston announced her resignation Thursday. She says she'll stay through November 13 or until the school board has a transition plan in place.

Board Chairwoman Shai Woodbury says an interim superintendent will be named soon, but the board won't rush a decision on a permanent replacement.

"We are in a difficult time," she says. "There are differences of opinions in how to continue weathering this pandemic and how it is affecting our lives, but we must continue to work together.”

Woodbury says the school system will continue to develop plans from Hairston's long-term agenda, including those that involve boosting literacy in the county.

Hairston is leaving to take a job in Danville, Virginia, where she says she grew up and started her career in education.
