Two gym chains are set to reopen their doors in North Carolina. The move comes while Governor Roy Cooper's order that indoor gyms remain closed is still in effect.
Earlier this month, for the third time, Gov. Cooper extended Phase 2 of a plan to resume business and social activities. The executive order allowed retail stores and restaurants to reopen, but bars, gyms, and other indoor fitness facilities were excluded. Crunch Fitness and Planet Fitness recently announced their intention to use an exemption outlined in the order that allows gyms to serve those with a medical need to exercise.
It's a loophole already being used by other North Carolina gyms that don't require medical documentation upon checking in. At least one Triad-area YMCA is offering new indoor health and wellness exercise options as directed by medical professionals. The changes come even as North Carolina Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mandy Cohen recently stated that heavier breathing at indoor gyms raises the risk of viral transmission.
The governor is expected to share information about the next phase of easing restrictions which would take effect later this week.
