Winston-Salem To Apply For Federal Funds To Prevent Homelessness During Pandemic

The City of Winston-Salem is applying for more federal funding to support those without stable housing during the coronavirus pandemic.

At a meeting Monday, the council agreed to apply for over $700,000 in federal CARES act money. The funding would go in part towards rapid rehousing and homelessness prevention programs.

Marla Newman, the city's community development director, told the council they would have until 2022 to spend the money.  But, she said they hope to use it well before that deadline.

“Because we are really focused on trying to move people from shelters to permanent housing, it is our goal to try to get these dollars expended within 12 to 18 months at the max," said Newman. "We are really focusing our efforts on true housing stability.”

If their application is approved, the city could receive the funds by early September.
