A downtown Winston-Salem roadway is set to permanently close to make way for new development.
The Winston-Salem City Council voted Monday to close and abandon Brookstown Avenue off West Second Street and North Broad Street.
The closure was requested by Brookstown Development Partners. The firm is planning to build a multi-million dollar apartment complex called The Easley on the site. The project also includes new pedestrian walkways and a small park. City Council approved preliminary plans for the site last fall.
One resident spoke in opposition to the closure, saying public spaces shouldn't be closed for private use. John Larson was the only council member to vote against the plan.
Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines told WFDD the street will close when construction begins, possibly later this year.
