Incumbent Mayors In Triad Rule Election Night

KERI BROWN/WFDD

It was a good night for area mayors running for re-election across the Triad.

In one of the most-watched Triad races, High Point Mayor Jay Wagner held off a strong challenge from Guilford Commissioner Carlvena Foster.

The incumbent trend held in Thomasville, but just barely, as Mayor Raleigh York Jr. defeated challenger Lisa Shell by 15 votes. In Kernersville, Mayor Dawn Morgan defeated Irving Neal. And in Clemmons Mayor John Wait won his race against longtime Clemmons staffer Larry Kirby.

All results are complete but unofficial.

Neither Greensboro nor Winston-Salem held city elections this year.

High Point voters also gave overwhelming approval to a series of bond packages in yesterday's municipal election. The measures provide more than $20 million each for road and parks-and-recreation projects, as well as $6 million for affordable housing plans. The total for all three projects is $50 million.

High Point voters in Guilford precincts passed all measures by over 70 percent.

The power of incumbency wasn't limited to the Triad. Unofficial results show Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles, Durham Mayor Steve Schewel, and Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo all won re-election on Tuesday.
