North Carolina Gets An Additional $10 Million For Charter School Effort

North Carolina will receive $10 million in additional federal support for its Charter School Program.

State officials announced the funding on Tuesday.

This comes in addition to the $26.6 million dollars awarded last fall when the state was approved for a Charter School Program by the U.S. Department of Education.

Officials say the money will go towards a program that serves educationally disadvantaged students. Jay Whalen with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction says that includes low-income students, those with disabilities, and migrant students.

“The purpose of the grant is to increase those students' access to high-quality charter schools around the state,” Whalen says.

According to The News & Observer, when the announcement was made, there were concerns about how to use up the entire grant. State officials say that won't be a problem.

North Carolina currently operates 196 charter schools.
