Two more cases of mumps have been found at Elon University following an outbreak affecting two universities, including Elon, late last month.

The school confirmed the new cases on Tuesday, bringing the total number at Elon to three.

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services reported seven cases in late September between Elon and High Point Universities.

In a message to the Elon community, the school says it is working with the local health department and that nearly all students have had two doses of the MMR vaccine, which protects against measles, mumps, and rubella. Health officials are recommending a third vaccine for affected communities.

The vaccine does not ensure immunity, but greatly reduces an individual's risk of contracting the disease.

Mumps is contagious and is transmitted through droplets in the air, similar to the flu. Symptoms include puffy cheeks, a tender, swollen jaw, fever, and headache.
