High Point University Student Arrested For Weapons On Campus

WFDD FILE PHOTO

A North Carolina university student has been arrested on charges of bringing guns on campus.

High Point University freshman Paul Steber was taken into custody on Tuesday. University security and High Point Police responded to reports from students that Steber was in possession of two firearms as well as ammunition.

The officers seized the firearms, and Steber was charged with two felony counts of weapons on campus or other educational property. He's being held on a $2-million bond.

After further investigation, Steber was also charged with a third count of Communicating a Threat of Mass Violence on Educational Property. Bond for this charge was set at $1 million.

In a statement sent to the High Point University community Tuesday evening, school officials said there was no immediate threat and that the owner of the firearms had been removed from campus. The statement praised the students who initially reported the potential threat.

North Carolina law prohibits anyone from carrying a firearm, openly or concealed, at any public or private school, college or university.

Bethany joined the staff of WFDD in the fall of 2012. She received her B.A. and M.A. in English Literature from Wake Forest University and focused on Anglo-Irish writing. Between undergraduate studies and graduate school, Bethany served as the intern to Talk of the Nation at NPR in D.C., participating in live NPR Election Night Coverage, Presidential debate broadcasts, regular Talk of the Nation shows, and helping to plan the inaugural broadcast of ‘Talk of the World.' She enjoys engaging with her interests in books, politics, and art in the interdisciplinary world of public radio. Before becoming Assistant News Director, Bethany was a reporter and Associate Producer for WFDD's Triad Arts and Triad Arts Weekend. Originally from Jacksonville, Florida, Bethany enjoys calling the Piedmont home.
Neal Charnoff joined 88.5 WFDD as Morning Edition host in 2014. Raised in the Catskill region of upstate New York, he graduated from Sarah Lawrence College in 1983. Armed with a liberal arts degree, Neal was fully equipped to be a waiter. So he prolonged his arrested development bouncing around New York and L.A. until discovering that people enjoyed listening to his voice on the radio. After a few years doing overnight shifts at a local rock station, Neal spent most of his career at Vermont Public Radio. He began as host of a nightly jazz program, where he was proud to interview many of his idols, including Dave Brubeck and Sonny Rollins. Neal graduated to the news department, where he was the local host for NPR's All Things Considered for 14 years. In addition to news interviews and features, he originated and produced the Weekly Conversation On The Arts, as well as VPR Backstage, which profiled theater productions around the state. He contributed several stories to NPR, including coverage of a devastating ice storm. Neal now sees the value of that liberal arts degree, and approaches life with the knowledge that all subjects and all art forms are connected to each other. Neal and his wife Judy are enjoying exploring North Carolina and points south. They would both be happy to never experience a Vermont winter again.
