Guilford County School System Plans For Future Renovations, Building Replacements

Guilford County School leaders are trying to figure out what to do about old and outdated buildings. The district is working on a master plan to address the problems.

School system and county officials recently reviewed the results of a $900,000 school facilities study conducted by MGT Consulting Group.

The report says nearly half the schools in the district are in poor or unsatisfactory condition. Consultants recommend closing 10 Guilford County Schools and rebuilding 27 in the next decade.

Scott McCully with GCS says they will take a deeper dive to assess boundaries, demographics and other programs before any decisions are made.

“The goal in some ways is to optimize, which means reducing the number of schools that we have," says McCully. "What number that is and where those occur either at elementary, middle or high has yet to be determined, but certainly the goal is to be more efficient with better facilities.”

The study says it would cost about $1.5 billion to repair or replace school buildings.

The Guilford County Board of Commissioners is considering a bond referendum for the November 2020 ballot to help pay for the improvements.
