Parents Want Action On Poor Building Conditions At Winston-Salem School

Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School officials say they are looking at four potential sites to build a new school for Brunson Elementary. KERI BROWN/WFDD

Parents and staff at a Winston-Salem elementary school are voicing their concerns over building conditions, and want district leaders to uphold the timeline promised for a new facility.

The state of Brunson Elementary was front and center at a public meeting in the school's gym this week, where frustrated parents demanded answers. There is a new school in the works, but according to district officials, the building won't be ready until 2022.

Jan Campbell Wharton has two children who currently attend Brunson. She says some of the problems, like a leaking HVAC system, can't wait until then.

“I have walked through the school with several of the teachers and seen mold in a number of the classrooms,” says Wharton. “There's a lot of paint flaking off of those windows, some of the windows have to be nailed shut because they won't close, which concerns me about fire safety.”

Parents were also concerned that the timeline for a new school could be delayed.

Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools Superintendent Beverly Emory assured the crowd that the project is on schedule, and encouraged parents to report immediate concerns to district officials.

She says the exact location for the school hasn't been decided, but an announcement could be made in the next couple of months.
