Larry Fedora is out as head football coach of UNC.
He took over the program before the 2012 season as an investigation of improper benefits and academic misconduct was winding down. A one-year postseason ban and scholarship reductions followed. But Fedora was able to rebuild, highlighted by an 11-win season in 2015 that included an ACC division championship.
It's been a different story the past two years. The Tar Heels won just five games while losing 18. This weekend, they lost a lead to the N.C. State Wolfpack in Chapel Hill, ultimately losing in overtime in a match-up marred by a post-game brawl in the end zone.
The move to oust Fedora will cost UNC about $12 million owed on his contract that runs through the 2022 season.
UNC is the only one of North Carolina's Big Four ACC schools not to qualify for the postseason this year. Wake Forest became bowl eligible this weekend by beating Duke 59 - 7 in Durham.
