Special Committee Weighs School Safety, Seeks Public Input

A committee from the Governor's Crime Commission is hosting two public forums to gather input on school safety. One of the forums will be held next week in Greensboro.

The Special Committee on School Shootings was created earlier this year. It's made up of representatives from law enforcement, courts, schools and other groups.

Their goal is to identify resources and develop recommendations to strengthen school safety. Guilford County Sheriff BJ Barnes serves on the committee and says communication is key to help prevent school violence.

“The Crime Commission is trying very hard to give a comprehensive, good report that will have some impact and meaning. We just don't need another report to sit on the shelf, we need something done,” says Barnes. “And the biggest thing that could come out of this, the best thing that could come out of this, is if we are all doing the same thing - being consistent with it across the board.”

The public forums will allow community members to ask questions and provide feedback. The Greensboro meeting will take place on Thursday, November 29 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Koury Convention Center.

Another forum is scheduled for Tuesday, November 20 in Greenville.

The Special Committee's final report, including public comments, will be delivered to the Governor's Crime Commission in December.
