A shooting between two students at Butler High School left one student dead Monday morning, according to CMS Superintendent Clayton Wilcox.

Matthews police say the shooter, who was another student, was taken into custody and a firearm was recovered. The police department says it believes this is an isolated incident.

One student told WSOC that the two students got into a verbal and physical fight before the victim was shot in the back by the suspect.

Butler High School was on lockdown Monday morning because of the shooting, but police lifted the lockdown around 9:30 a.m.

"The campus has been secured," CMS said on Twitter. "No immediate danger exists."

Families are now able to pick up their students from the entrance of the high school.
