North Carolina's Revenue Department is telling major online retailers to charge, and turn over, sales tax.
The state will be one of the first to collect sales tax on online purchases.
The move comes after a U.S. Supreme Court decision in June allows for taxes to be charged even if the seller lacks a physical presence in the state.
Officials say the existing state law will be enforced starting Nov. 1. Companies selling more than $100,000 annually, or having at least 200 transactions in North Carolina beginning last year would have to collect sales taxes and pass them on to the state.
Officials in the revenue department say they don't know how much money the new collections will bring.
