The Saturday before November's election day is back as an option for North Carolina voters.
The measure was the only piece of legislation lawmakers had on Governor Roy Cooper's desk when it adjourned. It was the latest in the back-and-forth between the GOP-led legislature and the Democratic governor over the the early voting schedule.
Last month, lawmakers passed a bill setting a 17-day schedule that ended the early-voting period on the Friday before election day. That rankled Democrats, who view that weekend opportunity as important and popular for voters.
Cooper vetoed that bill, saying it included measures that make it harder for people to cast their ballots.
He has now signed a bill that includes in-person Saturday voting. But it's only for this year's election, leaving open the possibility that the debate could return for future campaigns.
