Several High Point area nonprofits are partnering with a local business to enhance the city's landscape through public art. The plan features a large mural that depicts an eye-catching reptile.

Local artist Brian Davis will paint a 3D mural on the side of a popular hangout called Blue Bourbon Jacks in the Uptowne community of High Point. The site is located at a key intersection crossing Main Street and Lexington Avenue.

The design will feature a blue tailed skink with a multicolored backdrop.

Jeff Horney is the executive director of Theatre Art Galleries. He says the project will help enhance revitalization efforts in the city.

“Any kind of public art is really an economic driver,” says Horney. “Particularly with our new baseball stadium that's coming on board within the next year and development around that. I just think it sends the message that there's a vitality here that we want to promote in High Point.”

Horney says local groups hope to continue adding more murals throughout the city.

A community kickoff event and fundraiser called “Bring the Lizard to Life” will take place Saturday, June 9 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Blue Bourbon Jacks (BBJs) in Uptowne.

Organizers say the mural should be on display by the end of summer or early fall.
