A Month After Tornado Damage Shuts Three Schools, GCS Prepares To Move Forward

Damage in Greensboro following April's tornado and storms. DAVID FORD/WFDD

Answers on the future of three tornado-damaged schools could be coming from Greensboro education leaders next week.

It's been more than a month since Peeler, Hampton and Erwin Montessori schools were severely damaged by April's deadly tornado.

Since then, those students have been reassigned to classrooms at other schools.

According to the News & Record, Guilford County Schools Superintendent Sharon Contreras expects to be ready to make recommendations on what comes next at the board's Tuesday and Thursday meetings.

The public will be able to share its thoughts at the May 31st session, and the board could vote on a plan June 5th.

School leaders have apparently been working with the district's insurance provider to assess the damage, cost, and work on a path forward.
