Red Squirrel Chasers at Muddy Creek, and more.

Red Squirrel Chasers
Red Squirrel Chasers, Across the Blue Ridge
Red Squirrel Chasers. (L-R: Jim Collier, Stephanie Coleman, Dedo Norris & Jim Nelson)

I invite you to join us on Sunday, March 11 at 2PM at Muddy Creek Music Hall in Winston-Salem for a Red Squirrel Chasers performance we'll record for later broadcast. The group consists of Jim Collier of Raleigh; Stephanie Coleman, originally of Chicago and now New York City; and Jim Nelson and Dedo Norris of St. Louis.  Their music combines virtuosity on instruments, really compelling singing, and a satisfying combined Blue Ridge/midwestern lope. It's always fun being an audience member for these shows, and the Muddy Creek Music Hall experience is like no other, all in good ways. Think a nice funky setting, great acoustics, and excellent food and drink. Bring your family and friends too. Here's the link for more information and tickets

We are co-sponsoring the Surry County Old-Time Fiddlers' Convention in Dobson, NC on Friday and Saturday, April 6 & 7.  It's a rain-or-shine event with indoor and outdoor activities at Surry Community College.  Come join us, jam, check out the workshops, compete in band and individual contests, and just enjoy the music everywhere you go.

Hold Saturday, May 19 on your calendar for a great event in Boone, NC.  Across the Blue Ridge will sponsor and record a concert for later broadcast at the Jones House Community Center at 3PM. It's part of our Blue Ridge Music Trails series in conjunction with the North Carolina Arts Council and the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area. We'll feature Rick Ward, Strictly Strings, and Trevor McKenzie with Terri McMurray and me. Click here for details.

Also, hold the afternoon of October 6.  We're planning a special program in Winston-Salem, and we'll have more details coming along.

Feel free to write to us about Across the Blue Ridge.  It's always great to hear from listeners about what you like, what you feel can be improved, and ideas for stories and musicians we should feature.

We would like to thank our wonderful sponsors: Great Outdoor Provision CompanyFarm to Feet; and The Blue Ridge Music Center, and our collaborating station, WFDD Public Radio. With you, and partners like these, our communities and stations from West Virginia to North Carolina, Virginia, Kentucky and Florida have a fine thing going in Across the Blue Ridge, and it is a privilege to produce it for you.

Thanks for listening, and thanks for reading!  -- Paul

Former 88.5 WFDD News Director Paul Brown founded Across the Blue Ridge at WFDD in the late 1980s. It was an instant hit, and was broadcast on WFDD for more than a decade until Paul left to become an executive editor, producer, reporter, and world newscaster at NPR in Washington, DC. Now Paul is back in his beloved Blue Ridge region, his journalism and storytelling skills honed better than ever. He's ready to present more music, share discussion with more interesting characters, and be your friend and guide in discovery. Paul is actively involved in today's acoustic music scene, crisscrossing the region and the country as a teacher, performer, and interviewer.
