North Carolina A&T State University officials are proposing a merger of two academic departments.

The university announced through its Provost's office that political science and history will be combined into one new department.

Criminal justice - which is now part of political science - will become its own stand-alone program.

The departments are part of the university's College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. Officials say bringing history and political science together will boost scholarship and provide additional faculty support for students.

The move is not expected to have an impact on any current student's path to graduation.

North Carolina A&T leaders have been working on an academic realignment initiated last year seeking to make the university's academic programs more productive and its students better prepared for the workforce.

If approved by A&T's board, the change would go into effect in the 2018 Spring term.
