Reynolda House Opens Largest Exhibition To Date, "Georgia O'Keeffe: Living Modern"

Georgia O’Keeffe (American, 1887–1986). Ram’s Head, White Hollyhock—Hills (Ram’s Head and White Hollyhock, New Mexico), 1935. Oil on canvas, 30 x 36 in. (76.2 x 91.4 cm). Brooklyn Museum; Bequest of Edith and Milton Lowenthal, 1992.11.28. (Photo: Brooklyn Museum)

A new exhibit that opens today goes beyond the paintings of Georgia O'Keeffe, to depict the artist herself.

Reynolda House Museum of American Art's “Georgia O'Keeffe: Living Modern” includes 195 objects displayed throughout the gallery and historical home.

There are paintings and watercolors, but also wardrobe items handmade by the artist, and numerous photographs.

Phil Archer with Reynolda House says the exhibition offers a new perspective on O'Keeffe.

“Her self-fashioning contributed to her iconic status," he says. "She knew exactly how to present herself to the camera. The persona of a mysterious, remote, wise, woman of the desert was not at all accidental; it was quite intentional.”

Reynolda House Museum of American Art has already sold thousands of tickets to the show, which runs through November 19th.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the museum and the 100th anniversary of the house itself.
