Duke University has turned to an Appalachian State grad David Shumate to be the voice of its men's basketball and football programs.

Shumate replaces Bob Harris, who retired in March after calling the games for 41 years. During that time, Harris called all five of the Blue Devils' basketball national championships. He's a member of the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame.

Shumate is a 2006 graduate of Appalachian State. His experience includes handling play-by-play duties for the Southeastern Conference men's basketball tournament, the SEC baseball tournament and the Mid-American Conference football championship game.

Shumate's first football game comes Sept. 2 when Duke hosts North Carolina Central at Wallace Wade Stadium.
