Winston-Salem now has a new landmark to greet visitors. Over the weekend, twin arches were installed over U.S. 52.

They're part of the Salem Creek Connector now under construction. The connector will run from Winston-Salem State University to Wake Forest Innovation Quarter Research Park.

The Creative Corridors Coalition held a party for the public to watch the installation of the arches on Saturday.

The non-profit group secured funding for the project through private donations, grants, and some public funding. The cost for the arches was around $1.6 million.

Architect Donald MacDonald designed the arches for the interchange. The piece was inspired by the numerous arches found in Moravian communities.

Local officials say the entrance is the first in a series of design elements aimed at transforming the landscape of downtown Winston-Salem.
