Proposed Bill Would Require North Carolina Colleges To Report Outcomes

A higher education reform bill is on the agenda for state lawmakers this week. Republican supporters say the proposal would help prospective college students make better decisions about their future education.

It's called the Students Know Before You Go Bill. It would require the State Education Assistance Authority to collect data on things like graduation rates, student debt and graduates' earnings, and post the information on its website.

The measure would also provide information on projected employment needs in the labor economy and schools that may provide those majors.

“What we don't know yet is to talk to the institutions and find out if they gather data like that and can they produce it? We have a lot of work ahead of us if this passes,” says Elizabeth McDuffie, executive director of the North Carolina Education Assistance Authority.

Data from both private and public institutions of higher learning would be posted and updated annually.

Republican Senator Chad Barefoot is the primary sponsor of the bill.
