Sara suggests you take a walk through the heart of Haunted Wilkesboro this Halloween! Tours will leave at 7:30 and 8:00 PM from the Wilkes Heritage Museum. Be sure to you arrive 15 minutes before your tour time to secure your spot. You may hear the footsteps of past prisoners in their cells at the Old Wilkes Jail. Perhaps you'll spy the earthbound spirit of the little girl killed by runaway horses. You can linger at the site of the Tory Oak, where those loyal to the crown were hanged during the Revolutionary War. History, folklore, and spooky stories abound in this area! What better way to spend Halloween?
Since we're in for a weekend of paranormal activity (it is Halloween, after all), Sean is going to skip the slasher films and instead, "enter a dimension of sight, a dimension of sound, a dimension of mind." This weekend, he's going to enter...The Twilight Zone. Rod Serling's original 1959 Twilight Zone series was ground zero for some of the most influential storytelling of the 20th century, and brought together some of the finest writers and actors of the era to thrill, chill, or move the audience in unexpected ways. It was often at its best when pointing out the strangeness in every day life, and on a weekend when strange things are supposed to happen, it's the perfect TV companion. Bethany recommends a reading coming up next week by the Irish poet Ciaran Carson. He will be presenting selections from his latest collection From Elsewhere (WFU Press) in the Ring Theatre (Scales Fine Arts Center) on the campus of Wake Forest University on Wednesday, November 4th. Carson is known for his creativity in style (as seen in his latest volume). From Elsewhere is a collection of translations of the French poet Jean Follain paired with original responses by Carson. As an added bonus, during the reading, attendees will be treated to the sounds of traditional Irish music when Carson plays the flute and his wife Deirdre Shannon accompanies him on Irish fiddle. A book signing will follow the reading.
