The former president crossed the border from Argentina and was welcomed by a large group of supporters, just a day after his former economy minister, Luis Arce, was sworn in as president.

Luis Arce, a candidate handpicked by former President Evo Morales, is expected to be confirmed as the winner in the country's most important presidential election in a generation.

He was a giant of the last half-century in the South American country. But even if he tries to run again in the future, he'll never be the titan he once was, writes Bolivian journalist Raúl Peñaranda.

He's already the country's longest-serving leader — almost 14 years in office. His party controls all government branches and much of the national media. Now he's poised to win a new term on Oct. 20.
