Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools will receive nearly $750,000 from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in order to prepare the site for the new Brunson Elementary School.

The funding is part of a multipurpose grant from the agency’s Brownfields Program, which provides assistance in assessing and safely reusing properties “contaminated by prior industrial use.”

The site was formerly a Thomasville Furniture plant on the north side of Winston-Salem. According to the Winston-Salem Journal, the school district purchased the land for $2.25 million in late 2021.

In a press release, WS/FCS says the funding will be available on September 1, and the district can start applying expenses towards the grant this summer.

The new Brunson Elementary is slated to open in 2025.
