Winston-Salem police arrest woman for assault on school bus driver

The Winston-Salem Police Department has arrested a woman for assaulting a school bus driver in October.

Twenty-four-year-old Nayekamion Hairston was charged with felony assault inflicting serious bodily injury and a misdemeanor for trespassing and impeding a school bus.

In a press release, Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools Superintendent Tricia McManus said she was “shocked and saddened by this attack” on a district employee. She also said bus drivers deserve our “thanks and respect.”

This incident, along with other safety concerns, prompted dozens of bus drivers to stay home from work for a few days last month.

In response, the district is launching a new set of behavior expectations for bus riders and parents in January. McManus says the district will also pursue all legal options for adults who unlawfully board school buses.

Families with questions or concerns about bus operations should contact their school principals.
