Winston-Salem City Council approves new apartment complex near Truist Stadium

More apartments could soon be coming to downtown Winston-Salem. On Monday, the City Council approved a plan to build a new five-story complex near Truist Stadium.

The move greenlights the construction of a 279-unit building on the corner of First and Second Street, where a parking lot now sits. City staffers say it's the last area of the stadium district that currently remains undeveloped, other than the ballpark itself.

The West End Station and Link Apartments are both nearby. Another complex, The Easley, is currently under construction across the street from the new planned development.

At a planning board meeting earlier this month, member George Bryan, Jr. expressed concerns about the impact on traffic.

“But I think what we've seen is that we're not seeing the kind of volume come off of the apartments that is based on the predictive models," said Bryan. "In fact, it's less during these times. I don't know whether it'll continue that way or not. But it does seem like the roads can handle it.”

The new complex is being developed by DPJ Residential, the same company behind West End Station and The Easley. There's no word yet on when construction will begin.
