Greensboro City Council members are pushing for the completion of Windsor Chavis Nocho Community Complex despite lingering concerns about future unexpected costs.

Last week, the council received an update on the project that is estimated to be more than $70 million. The facility would include a recreation center, library and park at one site.

Councilmember Zack Matheny says it is difficult to predict the cost this far from the project's completion, noting that prices might rise.

But Councilmember Sharon Hightower says the project will be a catalyst for east Greensboro.

"It says that we are investing in an area that's been underserved and neglected for many years," she says. "By doing this project and doing it to the level that we are going to do it, it is setting the standard of how this community should be treated."

Hightower says the city needs to move with an urgency that shows the project has to be done.

According to the city council's agenda, the design phase is expected to be completed in December.

Construction will start in February 2025 and is estimated to be completed in March 2027.
