Guilford County Manager Marty Lawing has resigned after being in the post for nearly 8 years.

Lawing submitted his resignation during a closed session of the Guilford County Board of Commissioners on Thursday. He gave few details for his sudden departure.

Board Chairman Melvin “Skip” Alston said in a news release that the resignation was accepted, effective immediately. Alston noted that the county rarely shares details on personnel matters, adhering to personnel confidentiality laws.

After returning to open session, the board voted to move forward with the hiring of Michael Halford to fill Lawing's position. Halford had previously been the county's budget director.

Current Board Clerk Robin Keller will serve as interim County Manager during the transition.
