The Winston-Salem Hispanic League is taking to social media to provide information on the pandemic as racial inequities persist. This comes as Latino and African-American residents across the country are three times more likely to become infected than their white neighbors.

The Hispanic League is currently offering Facebook Live COVID-19 updates given by a range of Spanish-speaking panelists. Executive Director Mari Jo Turner says more than 2,000 people often view the online broadcasts. Community members are encouraged to submit questions to be answered in real-time.

"It's so important that the Hispanic community understand how difficult this time is that we're living in. And that they take the time to put their mask on, to social distance, and to wash their hands on a regular basis," says Turner. "Because we're not invincible and we want to make sure that everyone is safe in our community."

Turner says the Hispanic League is also actively distributing free facemasks and promoting free coronavirus screening sites in traditional Black and Hispanic neighborhoods, averaging roughly 160 tests per day.
