Guilford County Commissioner James Upchurch announced his resignation on Monday.

Upchurch shared in a statement he has accepted an opportunity in another state, and will not be able to complete his term. He was elected as a Democrat in 2020 to represent Guilford's 6th District before switching to the Republican party in 2021.

His term was expected to end in 2024.

According to state statutes on vacancies, the executive committee of the political party that nominated the elected official will have 30 days to make a recommendation to the board of commissioners.

In his announcement, Upchurch highlighted his achievements including helping to implement a pay plan for county employees, and delivering financial aid to High Point.

He says he has enjoyed advocating for the betterment of his community and Guilford County as a whole.

The Guilford County Board of Commissioners' next regular meeting is scheduled for Thursday.
