Greensboro Mayor Nancy Vaughan is taking the reigns at a local LGBT advocacy foundation.

On Monday, the Guilford Green Foundation's board announced Vaughan will become its executive director. The nonprofit raises and distributes money to LGBT-friendly organizations throughout Guilford County.

The board applauded Vaughan's community leadership over the past decade. She's served on the Greensboro City Council and is in her second term as mayor.

Vaughan will continue to lead the city as she takes on this new role.

According to the foundation, one of her first projects will be the development of a Greensboro LGBT Center. In a statement, Vaughan said she's ready to get to work.

“I have always been impressed by the people behind Guilford Green Foundation and plan to hit the ground running,” Vaughan said. “By harnessing the unique power of Greensboro's diversity, the foundation has unlimited potential.”

The city recently received high marks from the Human Rights Campaign for the inclusiveness of its municipal policies.
