Greensboro City Council pushes to see bridge renamed after fallen officer

The Greensboro City Council is looking to honor a police officer who was killed while off-duty.

The Council on Tuesday unanimously passed a resolution urging the North Carolina Department of Transportation to rename a bridge along I-40 after Sgt. Philip Dale Nix. The Sandy Ridge Bridge is close to where Nix was shot and killed in 2023 while intervening in a crime taking place at the Sheetz nearby.

Greensboro Police Chief John Thompson says the honor means a lot to the police department.

"Anybody that spent any time here in Greensboro knows the story of Sgt. Dale Nix and the sacrifice that he made — and not only him, but the sacrifice and service of his family," said Thompson.

Nix was with Greensboro Police Department for more than 20 years.
