Greensboro recently approved annexing land that was formerly part of the town of Summerfield into its city limits.

The land is a portion of nearly 1,000 acres removed from Summerfield by the state legislature last year. It came after years of back and forth between developer David Couch and town officials over a planned mixed-use project called the Villages of Summerfield Farms.

City Council unanimously approved annexing more than 70 acres of that land into Greensboro. The move paves the way for the first development called Christopher Village, which will include 268 dwelling units.

Mayor Nancy Vaughan says it addresses the region's dire need for more homes.

"I think this property will go towards solving that housing crisis because it will allow so much more density than it is allowed in the town of Summerfield," Vaughan says. "When you are looking at a town that has multi-acre lots, there's no way you're going to get ahead of the housing crisis."

Construction is expected to begin on the project in 2026 at the earliest.
