The Davie County Sheriff’s Office used Flock cameras to arrest three people last weekend.
According to a social media statement from the sheriff’s office, the system flagged two cars: one was reported stolen in Forsyth County, and the other was using a stolen license plate. Law enforcement tracked both vehicles and arrested the suspects.
Davie County Sheriff J.D. Hartman says the cases demonstrate the value of license plate reader technology.
According to the county’s Flock transparency portal, the Sheriff’s Office currently operates 82 license plate readers and other cameras.
This summer, commissioners approved a $4.3 million contract with Flock Safety for the next five years.
Some county residents, though, including Jayden Hilton, who lives in Advance, say they’re concerned about the technology.
“It interferes with our right to privacy, and it sets a precedent of losing our individual liberties for the cost of a false sense of security," Hilton says. "It watches criminals, but at the same time, it watches and keeps track of the innocents too. ”
Davidson County and the city of Reidsville both stopped using their Flock cameras in recent months after community pushback.
