Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday to mark the opening of a critical care facility on its Winston-Salem campus.

The $426 million building includes expanded emergency and intensive care services, 28 operating rooms, and advanced imaging equipment. Officials say it’s designed to improve access to trauma care in the Triad.

The tower is named for Dr. Julie Freischlag who has served as CEO of Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist since 2017 and plans to retire at the end of this year.

It’s expected to be fully operational by the fall.
