The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Board of Education is considering potential school closures ahead of the '26-'27 academic year.
That's according to Interim Superintendent Catty Moore, who spoke to the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners this week about a funding request to address the district’s outstanding debt.
Commissioners kicked that decision to their meeting next month. But during the discussion, Moore revealed that the district will consider closing some schools at an upcoming committee meeting on Aug. 12.
“My understanding, based on the brief time that I've been here, is that there may be three or four schools that are possible candidates for this," Moore said.
Moore says the School Board will be looking at factors like a facility’s age, condition and capacity, as well as birth rates and growth in the community.
A proposal could come as early as September. The school board would then hold a public hearing.
Moore says a decision would need to be made before November to allow families time to plan accordingly, and the district to rezone students as needed.
