Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools is hosting a college information night this week that will be entirely in Spanish.
Kenya Rocker, the lead high school counselor for the district, says applying to colleges and navigating financial aid can be complicated.
“Of course, we have school counselors in every school and we work with students on those processes," Rocker said. "But again, most of the advertising and materials and things that go out are written in English.”
That makes the process even more complicated for parents who speak another language.
That’s why on Wednesday night from 6 to 8 p.m., the district is hosting an information session at the Forsyth County Central Library entirely in Spanish. JuanEs Ramírez with the College Foundation of North Carolina will give a presentation all about applying to and paying for college.
"Having those materials in Spanish and having sessions like this in Spanish, you know, are just really needed," Rocker said. "I mean, our student population now is about a third Hispanic, and we need to be serving those families."
The event is open to all families in the district, and interpreters will be available.
